Tour Stop #1: KARE Center – Innovations in Agricultural Research

Since its official dedication in 1965, the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension has achieved international acclaim for leadership in the development of new fruit, nut, and grape varieties, innovative cultural and irrigation practices, pest and disease management techniques, and postharvest biology. In addition, KARE plays a leadership role in maintaining the quality of California’s rural environment, with programs in air and water quality, and mosquito management. A highlight of this stop will be a demonstration and discussion from KARE’s lab on their sterile insect release program for controlling navel orangeworm, a critical pest in nut crops, showcasing a cutting-edge approach to integrated pest management.

Tour Stop #2: Wylie Farms – Regenerative Pistachio and Citrus Ranch

At Wylie Farms, a 1,000-acre pistachio and citrus operation, attendees will see regenerative agriculture strategies in action. Ranch Manager Justin Wylie will guide participants through practices such as biological product application, carbon acid systems, automated irrigation, and in-house fertilizer brewing. In addition to pistachios, the farm produces citrus varieties including Page and Murcott mandarins and Lane Late navels. This stop highlights sustainable techniques like year-round ground cover, reducing chemical inputs, and improving water efficiency to enhance soil health and build climate resilience.

With changing regulations and increased consumer interest for fruit produced without multi-site fungicides, other alternatives must be explored. Biopesticides, with their multi-site mode of action, could fill the role of conventional pesticides as a resistance management tool. Biopesticides are effective when timed appropriately using forecasting models and alternated with single-site fungicides.

Fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) infections at bloom and apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) infections at fruit set can lead to epidemic level infections resulting in unmarketable fruit and revenue loss for growers. Germicidal (UV-C) light is effective at managing bacterial and fungal populations in lab and field settings. Let’s discuss its potential as an integrated management tool.

2. Orchard Floor Management Paradigm Shift: Embracing Natural and Planted Cover Crops

3. Germicidal Light in Apple Orchards: Reducing Disease and Boosting Marketable Yields 

Fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) infections at bloom and apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) infections at fruit set can lead to epidemic level infections resulting in unmarketable fruit and revenue loss for growers. Germicidal (UV-C) light is effective at managing bacterial and fungal populations in lab and field settings. Let’s discuss its potential as an integrated management tool.

4. Identifying and Addressing Next Hurdles and Ongoing Obstacles in Biocontrols

Longtime biocontrol practitioner Alex Traven leads a session for growers to discuss emerging challenges and still unsolved issues in the biocontrol world. Growers continually face new invasive pest challenges, quarantine rules, and changing food safety and customer standards, and more, and this session offers an opportunity to discuss with others facing similar challenges and the researchers who may be seeking new solutions, and to present the unique challenges they face.
